A Primer on T3 and T4 Levels in the Thyroid
Before we begin, you need to understand a little bit about how your thyroid functions. This is because OxyELITE Pro uses natural extracts that activate certain thyroid functions, and the USPLabs literature doesn’t really explain what is going on. So we’re here to save you.
There are two very important thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). They are tyrosine-based hormones that your thyroid gland produces whose prime responsibilities are to regulate your metabolism. The ratio of T4 to T3 released by the thyroid into your bloodstream is about 20 to 1.
However, T3 is 3-4 times more potent than T4! T4 is converted to the active T3 within cells by a process called deiodinases.
All about T3 – What it Does and Why it’s Great
Put simply, T3 is what increases basal metabolic rate, meaning it increases your body’s usage of energy.
Additionally, T3 increases the rate of protein synthesis via the production of RNA Polymerase I and II, which is an enzyme that produces RNA chains.
Meanwhile, T3 increases your glycogen breakdown and glucose synthesis rates during gluconeogenesis. It also decreases the effects of insulin, which normally leads to fat storage.
T3 also stimulates cholesterol breakdown and increases the number of LDL receptors – which means you’ll break down more triglycerides with higher T3.
Finally, T3 may increase serotonin in the brain, which would put you in a better mood. This has only been truly proven in animal studies though.
Enough about T3! How Do I Get Some of this Stuff?
Now, there are prescription drugs available to synthetically boost T3 levels, but those are for people with major thyroid disorders. 99%+ of us don’t need or want to mess with these dangerous synthetics. Bauhinia purpurea L (Leaf & Pod [standardized for Bauhiniastatins 1-4])
Bauhinia purpurea is a type of flowering plant that comes from South China and is known to grow in Hawaii, California, Texas, and Florida.
Studies show that Bauhinia purpurea extract increased T4 by 37% while increasing T3 by 83% in healthy adult animals. An incredible adjustment to the T3 to T4 ratio![1]
Even crazier, another study showed that after you give animals drugs that severely diminish their T3 and T4 levels, Bauhinia purpurea was able to counteract this and completely restore their thyroid hormone levels![2] We would never want to do this to ourselves, but it shows how powerful Bauhinia purpurea is.
Point being: Bauhinia purpurea increases T3 to T4 ratios, which increases fat-burn, energy, and mood.
Bacopa monnieri (Leaf)
Bacopa Monnieri (or Water Hyssop) is a type of perennial. This plant may be even more exciting than Bauhinia purpurea because studies show that its extract allows your body to naturally increase T4 levels by approximately 41% compared to controls [3]
While Bauhinia purpurea increases T4 to T3 conversion, Bacopa Monnieri simply naturally increases T4 levels.
So what USPLabs has done here is added an extract that increases T4 (Bacopa Monnieri), and then combined it with an extract that will convert more to T3 (Bauhinia purpurea), giving you a winning combination and massive fat-burning potential!

A Primer on the Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor
Sorry folks, but we have to quickly go back to the text books.
Adrenergic receptors in your cells sense specific molecules outside of the cell and use them to activate various responses. The Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor is a very important one that is targeted mainly by noradrenaline (norepinephrine) and adrenaline (epinephrine).
When you are under great deals of stress or are working extremely hard, your body releases adrenaline in the form of norepinephrine and epinephrine. Your alpha-2 receptors are then activated by the norepinephrine and/or epinephrine, which causes various types of “fight-or-flight” responses. For instance, the heart rate will increase, your pupils will dilate, energy will be mobilized, and blood flow diverted from other non-essential organs to skeletal muscle.
While that sounds exciting, the Alpha-2 receptor’s fight-or-flight response also does something else – it inhibits lipid breakdown within bodyfat, meaning it tells your body to save its fat![4] This makes sense, as it’s trying to save your life and put you into “survival mode”, but nowadays, we’d like to diminish that part of the Alpha-2 receptor’s job. Especially since we’re talking about adipose fat tissue, or bodyfat found in your gut, lovehandles, and other trouble spots.

Rauwolfia Canescens (Rauwolscine)
Rauwolfia (also known as Rauvolfia) is a family of plants related to the evergreen tree. Many plants in this family have an active compound named Rauwolscine, which is also known as α-yohimbine and corynanthidine.
You’ve probably heard of yohimbine, which is in many fat-burners. Yohimbine is able to stop alpha-2 receptors, which is what we want, but it also stops alpha-1 receptors – which slows lipolysis and thus negates everything we were doing with the alpha-2 receptors. This makes yohimbine ineffective in every study, and may also bring side effects.[5]
Rauwolscine/α-yohimbine, however, has a slightly different structure as yohimbine. This structure makes it act as an alpha-2 receptor blocker, yet doesn’t mess with alpha-1 as its different structure does not activate alpha-1.[6]
Thus, USPLabs in their genius ways have found a great solution to the yohimbine problem! We can now block alpha-2 receptors without screwing everything else up!

Cirsium Oligophyllum (Whole Plant Extract)
Cirsium Oligophyllum is another perennial plant found in East Asia. It has no known hazards, but this incredible extract simply reduced gains in bodyweight by 6.6%, subcutaneous fat mass by 26.2%, yet visceral fat mass by only 3%![7]
This is incredible because it’s subcutaneous fat that is just below the skin! Visceral fat, however, is the “organ fat” that your body needs a fair amount of, although obese individuals have far too much of this as well.
Greatest of all, cirsium oligophyllum extract works incredibly synergistically with caffeine[7], which of course is also in OxyELITE Pro! When mixing it with the alpha-2 receptor antagonists and caffeine in OxyELITE Pro, fat-burning is far exceeded than when using cirsium oligophyllum extract all alone!
In fact, the potency of caffeine combined with Cirsium Oligophyllum was nearly 10 times greater than Cirsium Oligophyllum alone.
Caffeine
